Kepler Wessels, in a detailed interviewed, appeared worried about the future of South African batting after the World Cup 2019. The likes of AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis may not feature in the South African team after WC 2019.

In the absence of their stalwarts, the Proteans have been found wanting in several areas this series. Wessels reckons South African cricket would have their task cut out to find their ideal replacements soon.

“Yes, there is because all three of them are of the same age more or less. There’s a chance that post-2019, they might not be there anymore, so nobody else will be exceptional or remarkable to put their hand up (to replace them),” answered Kepler Wessels when asked about the lack of depth in South African batting.

The 60-year old further expressed his shock regarding the manner in which the South African batsmen have struggled against wrist-spin off-late. Out of the 33 South African wickets taken so far in the innings, the Indian wrist-spinners have shared 24 wickets between themselves.

“I’m a little bit surprised (to see) them struggle to the degree that they have (against the leggies). Then also, when you take out all their entire top batsmen (due to injuries), with the exception of Hashim Amla, and expose all their inexperienced players, I suppose that’s going to happen, but I have been a bit surprised that they have struggled as badly as they have,” commented an appalled Wessels according TOI.

“They are particularly struggling to play the wrist spin and the Chinaman. They are facing difficulty picking the ball which turns away from the right angle, that’s the one they are really struggling with,” further added the former Australian opener who went on to captain South Africa.

Wessels went on the record to speculate that South Africans would be struggling in the World Cup of 2019, as they require a bit of variety in their bowling apart from their batting woes.

“Right now, we’re going to need to improve in every department. They need to make sure that their key players are playing well when they are in form. They need to get more variety in the bowling department. They don’t have the spinners right now,” replied Wessels when asked about the status of South African preparation for the World Cup.
