Kieron Pollard Smashes Joint-Fastest Fifty In Caribbean Premier League

Kieron Pollard, on Friday, slammed the joint-fastest fifty in the history of Caribbean Premier League. The St Lucia Stars skipper achieved the feat against defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders.

The hard-hitting batsman raced to the mark off just 18 balls to equal Sohail Tanvir’s record. The Pakistan fast-bowler had also slammed an 18-ball fifty for St Lucia Stars in 2014. Pollard scored 65 off just 23 balls to help his side post a daunting 212 for 2 in the allotted 20 overs. His unbeaten knock was studded with 1 four and seven sixes.

Rahkeem Cornwall and David Warner also starred with the bat, scoring 53 and 72 not out respectively as the Stars posted a huge total.

However, Pollard and Cornwall’s heroics turned into vain as Darren Bravo’s stunning knock took the Knight Riders home in the thrilling game. Bravo hit 94 not out off just 36 balls to help his side chase down the total with one ball remaining.

It looked all over for the Knight Riders when they needed 85 off the last five overs. However, Pollard turned into villain as Bravo hit him for five sixes and took a double to score 32 off the 16th over. Bravo then hit Cornwall for four sixes in the 18th over before Denesh Ramdin sealed the game with a six.

Speaking after the game, Pollard took the responsibility for his over which turned the game, saying:

“Scoring 212 was a fantastic effort from our guys. We set it up well, but TKR showed the class they had. It is a difficult pill to swallow, but I take the responsibility for my over that changed the game. The sixes that Darren hit were far into the stands and he just didn’t give us a chance. We have another six games to go and it would be nice to come here tomorrow and be positive.”

Meanwhile, the game saw a world record 34 sixes. Not only that, as many as five batsmen – Pollard, Cornwall, Bravo, Brendon McCullum and David Warner – scored fifties in a T20 game.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
