India’s win in the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand was marred with an injury to stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma. With Virat Kohli rested, Rohit Sharma took charge of the team. However, he had to retire hurt after injuring his calf while batting.

Rohit Sharma was on 60 when he walked off the field and could not return again. In his absence, KL Rahul led the side and guided India to an impressive 7-run win. Batting first, India posted 163 for 3 in the allotted 20 overs. Rohit Sharma top-scored for the hosts, scoring 60 before retiring hurt. In reply, New Zealand ended up on 156 for 9.

The Black Caps were off to a disastrous start as they were reduced to 17 for 3. However, a 99-run stand between Tim Seifert and Ross Taylor put them in a strong position before they suffered an almighty collapse to end up on 156 for 9. Both Taylor and Seifert scored fifties but their efforts were not enough to ensure a win for the side.

Update on Rohit Sharma:

At the end of the game, KL Rahul gave a promising update on Rohit Sharma’s injury. While BCCI just stated that “Rohit Sharma is being assessed at the moment”, KL Rahul said that “he should be fine in a couple of days”.

“Rohit’s alright, unfortunate injury, hopefully he should be fine in a couple of days,” said Rahul.

Rohit is now in a race against time to be fit for the first game of the three-match ODI series which starts on Wednesday. With Shikhar Dhawan also out of the tour with an injury, the team-management would be praying that Rohit recovers in time to play the ODI series.
