A recent report from PTI has suggested that the board is looking at three names for vice-captaincy of the Indian T20I team after captain Virat Kohli announced that he will step down from the role after the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman. With Rohit Sharma taking over the captaincy, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah are in the race to become his deputy.
The report has suggested that since Rohit Sharma will take over as the T20I captain after the T20 World Cup 2021, the vacancy for the new vice-captain should go to someone younger, who can then take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma when the time comes given the Mumbaikar is 34-years-old.
The BCCI is in no hurry to announce the designated vice-captain for T20 captain-in-waiting Rohit Sharma after the T20 World Cup but there are three possible choices. However, three names are doing the round which are KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah.
KL Rahul Front Runner, Rishabh Pant Serious Contender, Jasprit Bumrah Dark Horse: Report
KL Rahul has had a brush with captaincy when he was the stand-in captain during the fifth T20I against New Zealand last year and led the team when the Kiwis batted since Rohit Sharma had injured his hamstring. He also captains the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2021.
Next in line is Rishabh Pant, who has captained Delhi in domestic cricket and is currently leading the Delhi Capitals franchise in IPL 2021. He has impressed one and all with his leadership as the DC is on the top of the points table going into the second half of the tournament. The report says that if DC wins the IPL 2021, then Rishabh Pant will become the no.1 contender to be the next India T20I vice-captain.
The report also mentioned the name of India and Mumbai Indians fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who has no experience of captaincy in any format but has been part of the Indian and MI leadership group for some time now.
“Pant is a serious contender but you can’t rule out KL also as he is an IPL captain. The darkhorse will be Jasprit Bumrah,” the BCCI insider told PTI.
It remains to be seen what unfold given that there is one more T20 World Cup coming up next year in 2022 with Australia hosting the event.
