Former India skipper Kapil Dev reckons swashbuckling opener KL Rahul should be in the squad which will fly to England next year for the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Meanwhile, Rahul was a part of the Asia Cup squad that lifted the trophy in the UAE. However, he scored some crucial runs in the only match he played in the tournament.

When asked if KL Rahul deserves more chances in the playing XI, Kapil Dev reckoned there was still enough time for the stylish right-hander to slot in the middle order if not as an opener.

I’d like Rahul to be playing and it would be good if he figures in the World Cup. There are still eight months between now and the tournament, so there’s time for the team management to work things out. If Rahul is not going to open, he can still find a place in the middle order. After all, with the advent of the T20 game, I wouldn’t say there are fixed positions for batsmen,” Kapil Dev said to The Telegraph.

The 1983 World Cup winning skipper also hailed the Afghanistan cricket team for their valiant show throughout the tournament. A number of players starred for the side who gave the teams a run for their money including champions India who they held to a thrilling tie in Super Four.

The brand of cricket played by Afghanistan. The Afghan cricketers hardly have a life, owing to all the problems at home, yet they have beaten tremendous odds to get to where they have. Now, we don’t have to talk in terms of only the four big cricket-playing nations, but there’s Afghanistan as well. Each one of their Super Four matches was decided in the last over, two lost and one tied,” Kapil Dev signed off.
