Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently released his autobiography titled Imperfect. It gives an insight about cricket in Mumbai, international cricket, and his time in the commentary box. Manjrekar revealed some interesting facts while chatting with The Quint ahead of the book release.
Manjrekar played 111 matches for India. He had a dream start to his Test career, scoring a magnificent 108 against a West Indies side that fielded Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop, and Courtney Walsh, in just his third Test.
Being one of the best batsmen India has produced, Manjrekar admitted that he was aware that his time was up when he saw the advent of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. It was a tour that established the foothold of Dravid and Ganguly.
Manjrekar stated that while Dravid’s success was expected, Ganguly took everyone by surprise. Manjrekar further stressed it was by sheer talent that Ganguly broke into the squad.
“He (Sourav) was not in the team on the back of big scores but was picked because he had talent. Just the way he batted in those conditions, we all thought he will have a good series and his success eventually in the Test series didn’t take us by surprise,” Manjrekar noted.
On the other hand, he mentioned that Dravid was destined to play for the country.
“Dravid looked like he was destined to play for India, but the way they batted in the series, I knew my time was up,” Manjrekar singed off.
