The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), today, announced the list of 1122 players who have registered for the auction. Surprisingly, Joe Root, England’s Test captain, has also thrown his hat in the ring while Mitchell Starc made himself available after withdrawing from the tournament last year.
Though the board is yet to announce the list of players along with their base price, a report in Sportstar suggests that a total of 36 players have set their base price Rs 2 Crore, the highest limit in the auction.
In the top-most list, there are some expected names in form of Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, Glenn Maxwell etc.
The biggest surprises in this list are Yuzvendra Chahal and Rashid Khan. Chahal was the highest wicket taker in T20I cricket last year, which has now seen him raising his base price. Rashid, on the other hand, was the second highest wickets taker last year in T20I cricket and decided to raise his base money.
In the second best price bracket i.e. Rs 1.5 Crore, the name of Washington Sundar is something which is surprising. He went unsold in the previous IPL auction but after coming in as replacement of R Ashwin mid season, he just didn’t impress IPL franchises but also made it to the Indian team. He is also a capped player now.
Hashim Amla, who went unsold in 2016 IPL auction, has raised his base price from Rs 1 Crore to 1.5 Crore. He was signed by Kings XI Punjab in mid of IPL 2016 and it was in 2017 when he shone for his side by scoring two centuries in the season.
Out of all the players, Gautam Gambhir is expected to go at the highest price as he apart from contributing to on batting front, he will come with an experience of leading an IPL team twice to a title victory.
The auction for the upcoming IPL edition will be held on January 27 and 28 in Bangalore.
