The chairman of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), Vinod Rai will turn 70 on May 23. Meanwhile, as per Justice Lodha Recommendation, no office-bearer is allowed to hold office beyond the age of 70.

However, Lodha has urged Rai, the former Auditor General of India and Comptroller to stay at the helm till all the reforms are implemented.

However, office bearers in BBCI will likely raise the issue in the apex body to ensure Rai’s exit. The officials might use this as a pretext to continue in their state associations.

Moreover, Justice Lodha, the brain behind these reforms has dismissed the logic.

Vinod Rai should continue as the head of CoA:

Lodha said to TOI that Rai should continue as the head of CoA till the implementation of all reforms. Further, Lodha explained in detail why Rai should continue.

The reforms were supposed to have been implemented by September last year and CoA was picked by the Honorable Supreme Court for this reason. But since that hasn’t happened, Vinod Rai should stay at the helm of affairs. This is the order of the highest court of the land. I don’t think it would be appropriate to make him leave,” Lodha said.

When the apex court appointed Rai as the head of CoA, he wasn’t above 70. He was given the mandate to implement the reforms. Till the time the reforms aren’t implemented, Rai should continue in his post,” he explained.

Lodha thumped BCCI office-bearers:

Lodha targets the current BCCI office-bearers for not having done enough to implement the reforms. However, the Supreme Court gave them an undertaking to ensure the same.

Implementing the reforms isn’t the responsibility only of CoA. Even the office-bearers should play their roles to implement the reforms, which is again as per the apex court’s order. The fact that the office-bearers haven’t done much has delayed the implementation process,” Lodha added.

Meanwhile, sources added that Rai is a “part-time appointee” with a specific mandate, which can go beyond age, as the 70-year age rule is for those contesting elections.
