Bengal star Manoj Tiwary, on Monday, entered the record books after smashing a monumental triple century against Hyderabad in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. In the process, he became the first batsman from Bengal to hit a triple hundred in Ranji Trophy in 21 years. The out-of-favour India batsman smashed an unbeaten 303 in a Elite Group A match at Kalyani Stadium in Kolkata. Riding on Manoj Tiwary’s knock, Bengal declared their innings on a mammoth 635 for 7.
His knock was studded with 30 fours and five sixes as played 412 balls during his stunning innings. He became only the second batsman from Bengal to score a triple century in Ranji Trophy after former India batsman Devang Gandhi’s 323-run effort against Assam way back in 1998. Manoj Tiwary’s innings was also the first triple hundred of 2019-20 Ranji Trophy.
Bengal were reeling at 60 for 3 at one stage but recovered thanks to Manoj Tiwary as the veteran rescued the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led side. No other batsmen apart from Tiwary got a hundred for Bengal. Wicket-keeper batsman Shreevats Goswami was the next highest run-getter with 95 while Arnab Nandi and Anushtup Majumdar scored fifties.
Manoj Tiwary has been one of the most consistent batsmen in domestic circuit for more than a decade now. However, he is one of those unlucky cricketers who did not really get the reward for working hard in domestic circuit. His international career is known to one and all.
The right-handed batsman was mysteriously dropped from the Indian team for months right after he scored his maiden ODI hundred. That was not the first time, he received a setback in his career. Days before his scheduled ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2007, the Bengal cricketer injured his shoulder and was sidelined from the schedule.
He then made his debut in 2008 and was bowled by Brett Lee for just 2. Tiwary had to wait nearly three years for his second match in the 50-over format. The Bengal star has not played for India since 2015 and is unlikely to don the national jersey again.
