Mark Wood, England fast bowler, has warned that England Cricket could miss out from unearthing their future Joe Root or Ben Stokes if grassroots cricket is not started at the earliest.

The proliferation of the novel coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown that ensued because of its threat, has had a disastrous effect on recreational cricket in England.

Recreational cricket is suspended since March and it continues to remain so even as lockdown restrictions continue to ease in the country.

“I’m sure a lot of people in this country would love grassroots cricket to be back up and running,” Mark Wood was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“We don’t want to lose the next Ben Stokes, the next Joe Root, the next superstar that might be coming through for the game,” he added.

Earlier, the England and Wales Cricket Board [ECB], however, was aiming to get recreational cricket up and running from July 04 and had reckoned that it was still in talks with the United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Johnson, however, has ruled out the possibility of it resuming anytime soon as, according to him, the ball is a ‘natural vector of the virus’.

Mark Wood, on his part, reckoned that if pubs, restaurants can start, cricket could be on the horizon as well.

“If you can go to the pub, and go to restaurants – you’d hope that cricket could be on the horizon as well,” Mark Wood said.
