Argentina kept their hopes alive in the Fifa World Cup 2018 after they managed to win their last group game against Nigeria by a 2-1 margin. It was a huge game for Argentina and Lionel Messi. The runners-up from the previous edition of the tournament were facing possible elimination after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Croatia in the 2nd group game.
There were several talks regarding the strategies of Sampaoli, Argentine coach. Argentina needed to play all out football in order to change the morale in the dressing room. Messi who was undoubtedly the biggest player in the match put Argentina in front with a brilliant goal with his right foot. The aerial pass was quite exceptional from Banega. However had it been any other striker than Messi, it would not have been a perfect shot like him.

He doesn’t prefer his right foot. However, he showed that he has enough skills in his right foot as well. He thumped the ball on the right corner to send the Argentine supporters in a tizzy. The reaction of another legend Diego Maradona was quite extraordinary from the stands. Following Messi’s goal, he looked up at the heavens and was unable to control his emotions.
Nigeria equalised through a penalty during the initial stages of the 2nd half. It was a pathetic situation for the South American country to be in. Nigeria had almost secured their place in the Round of 16 when Marcus Rojo netted the winner for the Argentines in the 87th minute of the game. That was undoubtedly the biggest moment in the match which helped Argentina storm into the Round of 16.
Maradona’s unsporting celebration
Following the goal, Maradona was yet again over the moon. The celebrations were quite ecstatic and some of his gestures didn’t go down well with the sporting world. In a gesture of disrespect to the opposition, Maradona showed his middle fingers after Rojo completed the winning goal. Former England cricketer skipper Michael Vaughan called Maradona as a horrible human being.
