Mohammed Shami set up a food stall for handing out masks and food along the National Highway 24 in Uttar Pradesh. The 29-year old speedster did the same outside his residence in Sahaspur. Earlier, Shami also helped a migrant labourer, who succumbed in hunger outside his house as seen through CCTV. He immediately rushed out to feed him, who was on his way to Bihar from Rajasthan via Lucknow.

“I am trying to help as much as I can. There are migrant workers here who are really struggling to meet ends. The highway is also near my house so I can see people having a tough time. I feel I should help and I am doing as much as possible.” Shami said as quoted by India Today.

BCCI shares a video of Mohammed Shami assisting citizens:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to their official Twitter handle and commended Shami for helping the poor people while wearing a mask. It posted a caption as “As #IndiaFightsCorona, @MdShami11 comes forward to help people trying to reach home by distributing food packets & masks on National Highway No. 24 in Uttar Pradesh. He has also set up food distribution centres near his house in Sahaspur.”

Ever since the situation got serious, several Indian sports stars including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Harmanpreet Kaur have come forward and assisted monetarily. BCCI themselves donated a sum of INR 50 lakhs to help the needy. The migrant workers have been severely affected ever since the nationwide lockdown was implemented, having lost their lives and livelihoods while going from one place to another.
