MS Dhoni was the most successful Test captain for India before Virat Kohli bettered his record. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India first earned the top Test rankings in 2009 and remained at the position for nearly 18 months. Apart from that Dhoni has always reads the game well and his side.
Ravichandran Ashwin was involved in one of the most dramatic chase for India during the 2011 Test against the West Indies. India needed two runs off one ball as Ashwin hesitated to pick up the second run as Denesh Ramdin and wicketkeeper Charlton Baugh combined to pull of a run-out.
Ashwin believes it was a right decision to make on his part. But said that Dhoni was of the opinion that he could have hit the previous ball for a single and could have allowed Varun Aaron to slog in the last ball.
“I still believe it was the right decision to make. When I hit the ball to long on, it really went quick and straight to the fielder, so the chance to run for two was not there. It was quite an interesting game,” Ashwin told Mazher Arshad on YouTube.
“After the game, MS Dhoni came to me and said, ‘You could have taken a chance in the previous ball. Probably taken a single, and let Varun Aaron slog one off the last ball’. So yeah, that’s hindsight.”
