Former India opener Virender Sehwag, on Thursday, opined that selection committee must speak to MS Dhoni and clear things out regarding his future. There is an air of confusion surrounding Dhoni’s future. While earlier reports suggested that Dhoni would retire soon, things have headed in a different direction in recent times.
During the World Cup, reports come out that Dhoni would retire at the end of India’s campaign in the tournament. However, the former India skipper himself denied those reports. Later reports suggested that Dhoni was no more an automatic selection in the team before the veteran decided against going to West Indies for the upcoming tour.
But amidst all these, the team-management and the BCCI have kept mum on Dhoni’s future. And now Virender Sehwag has said that the selectors should talk to his former teammate while also saying that retirement should be Dhoni’s individual call.
“It should be left to MS Dhoni to decide when to hang his boots. The duty of the selectors is to reach out to Dhoni and inform him that he is no more being seen as India’s wicket-keeper batsman going forward. I wish the selectors had asked me as well about my plans,” Sehwag told ABP.
Dhoni has been under pressure for quite some time now and his performance in the World Cup did not help his cause either. Dhoni’s spot in the Indian team has been a source of constant debate in the last 12 months. The debate only intensified during the World Cup, during which even Sachin Tendulkar questioned the intent Dhoni showed during his innings against Afghanistan
The selectors will announce the team for the West Indies tour later this week and it is likely to clear the picture on Dhoni’s future.
