After Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill has positioned himself as a potential influential figure in the near future. If Gill's progression continues, then in the near future, the top-order batter could expand his wings more across all three formats as captain.

Amid speculations over Rohit Sharma's future, in an interesting conversation, it is claimed that Shubman Gill is likely to be the next superstar for the Indian National Cricket Team across the formats. This means Gill, who currently represents the team in Tests and ODIs, could feature in the T20Is as well.

The Indian team management showed immense trust in Shubman Gill

There is no doubt that the Indian team management and the selectors have immense trust in the Punjab-born as soon as he replaced Rohit Sharma for the leadership roles in Tests and ODIs. During an online interaction organized by Ray Sportz, it is claimed that Shubman will emerge as the next big thing for Indian cricket, and his career graph is expected to keep climbing in the upcoming days.

While the growth may be visible significantly after a couple of years, by 2028. The year 2028 will be significant for Indian cricket, as it will be the year when two major sports events, the ICC T20 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics— will take place. Both tournaments will be in T20 format.

Shreyas Iyer needs to prove himself as the T20I captain for India

As of now, Shreyas Iyer is leading the India National Cricket Team in the shortest format of the game, which could change in the future if the outcome fails to match the level of expectations. With Shreyas Iyer as the captain of India's T20I team, the Men in Blue are yet to register their first win as they have had to endure 6 defeats in a row in 7 matches.

Out of seven games, two against Ireland and five against England, India suffered two defeats against the Ireland National Cricket Team, four against England, and one T20I against the Three Lions was called off due to rain. Iyer joined the team as the captain, replacing the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, who, as a leader, guided the team for 42 wins and 8 defeats in only 52 matches, which made his win percentage around 82%.

It will not be easy for Iyer to match the tally, as he has already endured six defeats in six matches. As it was reported earlier, Shreyas Iyer was not the only one who was in the race to become the successor to Suryakumar Yadav. Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson were the other two contenders who were reportedly in the consideration strongly to replace Yadav.

Shubman Gill could replace Shreyas Iyer in the T20I format

However, in the end, it was Shreyas Iyer who got the opportunity. How long will he be in the position if the results are not close to expectations? That remains a doubt after the T20Is against Ireland and England subsequently.

During the online interaction, where a group of journalists participated in the panel, tall claims were made over Shubman Gill's future with the India National Cricket Team. Kushan Sarkar, a PTI journalist, claims that Shubman Gill will become one of the most influential skippers in Indian cricket and could match Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's heights as a captain as he grows more mature.

In a bold claim, Kushan also mentioned that if Gill continues to perform well, then there will be chances to see Shubman Gill leading the national side in the 2028 T20 World Cup and 2028 LA Olympics.
