One of the major surprises in India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa is the change in the spin department. They rested Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the T20I format and asked the youngsters to fill the shoes of the Wrist duo. Another major surprise was the unavailability of MS Dhoni for the series.
India’s chief selector MSK Prasad has confirmed that MS Dhoni distanced himself for the three T20 matches against the Proteas, as reported by various media houses. We are trying to build a pool of spinners – MSK Prasad
When asked if Kuldeep and Chahal’s continued absence in T20 squad while they are considered assets in ODI cricket hint at any change in policy, Prasad said that they are looking at the other options as well in order to make things look flexible ahead of the ICC T20I World Cup 2020.
“We are just trying to build a pool of spinners. The likes of Rahul Chahar, Krunal Pandya and Washington Sundar had done well in the last series and they deserve another go,” MSK Prasad said.
Dhoni has distanced himself from cricket for the past one and a half month, Dhoni even served for the Indian Army for 15 days in Kashmir. Rishabh Pant who smashed a scintillating 65 of just 42 deliveries against the Caribbean side has been handed another chance to prove himself.
India and South Africa will play in three T20Is starting in Dharmsala on September 15. The following two games are in Mohali (September 18) and Bengaluru (September 22). The Proteas will be led in the series by their wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock while Faf du Plessis will be away from the game.
