Mumbai Cricketer Rakesh Panwar Stabbed To Death

In a shocking incident, a cricketer from Mumbai was stabbed  to death by three unknown assailants in the city’s Bhandup area. The gruesome attack took place on Thursday night. Full details of the fatal assault are still awaited.

According to ANI, the cricketer is identified as Rakesh Panwar, who was in his mid-thirties. Govind Rathore, who claims to be the childhood friend of the deceased said he was accompanied by his girlfriend when the assailants attacked him.

“I was not with him. He had an old enmity with Khan family here. He was accompanied by his girlfriend when the incident took place,” said Govind.

Govind further that the deceased also worked as a cricket coach and provided training to the young cricketers. The police investigation is underway.

Deaths in cricket:

While incident like the one that happened with Rakesh Panwar is not at all common in international cricket, there have been several deaths in cricket due to on-field mishaps. Around a dozen of high profile names have succumbed to on-field injuries. According to records, the first cricketer who died due to on-field mishap was England’s Jasper Vinall after being hit with bat.

In this decade, three high-profile names have succumbed to on-field injuries. South Africa’s Darryn Randall, Australia’s Phillip Hughes and Namibia’s Raymond van Schoor are the three big names to have died this decade. From India, Raman Lamba is the only international cricketer to have died of on-field mishap. He had died after the ball hit him on his head while he was fielding.
