Team India have been 80 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the first One Day International in Hamilton on Wednesday. The Men in Blue suffered a crushing four-wicket defeat in the series-opener as the high-flying visitors came crashing down after clean sweeping the five-match series.

India were looking set to win the first ODI after century from Shreyas Iyer and fifties from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul propelled them to a mammoth total of 347 for 4 in the allotted 50 overs. However, the Black Caps came up with a spirited batting display to chase down the total with 11 balls to spare.

Ross Taylor starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten ton while Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham scored fifties. And as if the defeat was not enough, India were also found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate. Match referee Chris Broad imposed the sanction after Virat Kohli’s side was ruled to be four overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Shaun Haig and Langton Rusere, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Chris Brown leveled the charges.

This is the third time India have been fined in a row on the ongoing tour. India were docked 40 per cent of their match fee after falling short of target by two overs in the fourth T20I before being fined 20 per cent of their match fee for the same offence in the fifth T20I.
