The Indian Premier League (IPL) has arguably been one of the greatest Twenty 20 leagues in the world. Ever since its inception in 2008, it has attracted people from all over the world. There are few records in the tournament which might never be broken in the years to come.
However, nothing is impossible but these nine records will be pretty tough to break in the foreseeable future.
Chris Gayle’s highest individual score:
Windies burly Chris Gayle’s blistering 175 off just 66 deliveries in the 2013 edition of the tournament remains the highest individual score.
Well, when Brendon McCullum smashed 158 in the inaugural match of IPL history no one thought anyone will break it. But the big man from Jamaica proved everyone one wrong following his blitzkrieg.
In a match against the now defunct, Pune Warrior India (PWI), the southpaw smashed 175 in no time. He was in a murderous mood and spanked the Pune bowlers all around the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. His innings was studded with 13 fours and 17 sixes which is also a record in T20 circuit.
Most runs in a season by Virat Kohli:
The Indian skipper Virat Kohli had a sensational time in the 2016 edition of the cash-rich T20 league. He was churning out runs for lunch, breakfast and dinner, and it looked very difficult to dismiss him all through the tournament.
The 29-year-old Kohli was at his imperious best and eventually smashed four centuries alone in the tournament.
It was mayhem as Kohli thrashed all the bowlers. He ended up scoring 973 runs in the tournament. Kohli further remained as the only player to score more than 900 runs in a single IPL season.
Record of CSK:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has had a sensational record in the IPL. In the nine seasons, they have been part of the tournament, Chennai has qualified for the playoffs on all nine occasions.
The Super Kings have won three trophies and has subsequently qualified for the final on seven occasions in 10 times. After being sidelined for a couple of years, they made a sparkling return in 2018 to claim their third IPL title. Dhoni has been the captain of the franchise on all nine seasons.
Largest margin of victory by runs- Mumbai Indians:
The year was 2017 and the eventual champions were playing against the Delhi Daredevils (DD). After being put into bat, Mumbai Indians (MI) posted a mammoth 212 for three in their allotted 20 overs riding on a sensational knock of 63 off 35 deliveries by Kieron Pollard. It was another Caribbean, Lendl Simmons, who got Mumbai off to a brilliant start. He scored 66 of 43 deliveries.
It was a horrendous batting display by Delhi as they were bundled out for just 66 runs.
Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma were the wreckers in chief for the Indians bagging three wickets each to hand Mumbai the largest victory in the tournament history by 146 runs.
Highest batting partnership- AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli:
The two modern-day generation greats share the record partnership in IPL History. On this particular day, the two modern geniuses recorded century each and shared an unbelievable 239 runs partnership.
Their partnership took Royal Challengers to a huge total of 248 runs. Scoring 200 is an achievement in T20 and sharing a 239-run stand is something unreal.
Moreover, it will take a serious effort to break this record. The score of 248 is the second highest score in the tournament, Incidentally, the highest score also belongs to Bangalore.
Highest team total by RCB:
It was the same match when Gayle recorded the highest individual score in IPL history.
The match was set at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium against Pune. Courtesy a special knock of 175 from Chris Gayle, Bangalore set up a huge score of 263 runs in 20 overs.
Moreover, it was sensational hitting by Gayle and the bowlers were left searching for answers. The total of 263 will indeed take a serious effort to upstage it.
Lowest team total- Royal Challengers Bangalore:
Bangalore has the record for both the highest and lowest score in IPL history. In 2017, Bangalore recorded just 49 runs in a group match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Also, it was a horrendous display of batsmanship by Bangalore as KKR bowlers ripped through their batting order. After being out into bat Knight Riders made a moderate 134 and needed something special to win.
Nathan Coulter-Nile started off brilliantly and bagged the crucial wickets of Kohli, Gayle and AB de Villiers. It was Umesh Yadav and Colin de Grandhomme, who bagged three wickets each – to bowl out Bangalore for a paltry 49 runs.
Highest Successful run chase-Rajasthan Royals:
It was the inaugural edition of the tournament and the match was played between now-defunct Deccan Chargers (DC) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
After batting first, Chargers posted a mammoth total of 214 runs courtesy a sensational century by Andrew Symonds.
However, Rajasthan started off quite brilliantly. Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan scored briskly early on. However, the main cameo was played by Rajasthan skipper Shane Warne as he took his franchise to a famous victory.
It will certainly take some serious efforts to break this IPL record.
Best Bowling figures-Sohail Tanvir:
It was the only time in the competition that Pakistan players were allowed to take part. Wrong-footed left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir was part of the Jaipur-based outfit and was quite spectacular all through the tournament.
However, in one group game against the Super Kings, it was some sensational piece of bowling by Tanvir as he finished with figures of six for 14.
In addition, Tanvir’s uncanny bowling action worked in his favour as none of the Chennai batters was able to pick his slower deliveries. So, his record will be pretty difficult to beat.
