Former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah has raised an issue after Sheldon Jackson departed from Saurashtra to Puducherry ahead of the upcoming domestic season. Niranjan Shah is of the view that salary cap must be introduced for the athletes switching states to appear as “guest players” to stop poaching. Niranjan previously played for Saurashtra and currently serves as the secretary of SCA.

A couple of days ago Sheldon Jackson announced his intention to move from Saurashtra to Puducherry, claiming it is the correct time to play for some other team. The right-handed batsman was one of the vital cogs for Saurashtra as they clinched their first Ranji Trophy title earlier this year. Jackson was the highest run-getter for them.

According to Niranjan Shah, it is a matter of concern for the home state since in the long-term, players will start negotiating in other associations. He believes that BCCI must begin a cap system to ensure that a guest player does not earn more than a certain amount and that with nine new teams in the Ranji Trophy, they will bargain like this.

It’s a matter of concern for the home state because in the longer run, players will start negotiating with other associations. BCCI should introduce a cap system to ensure a guest player doesn’t earn more than a certain amount. Nine new teams have been included in the Ranji Trophy straightaway without proving anything. They will start bargaining like this,” Niranjan stated as quoted by Indian Express.

The 76-year old said that the guest player system got introduced since many excellent players could not find spots in Mumbai, Karnataka or other teams due to intense competition. However, he has expressed concerns that, like IPL, players cannot do their own valuation.

“There were many good players in Mumbai, Karnataka or other teams who couldn’t find a place in their respective teams because of big competition. So, the guest player concept was introduced. Now what is happening is players have started their own valuation. Ranji Trophy cannot become like IPL,” he added.
