The next edition of the World T20 which was slated to take place next year is reportedly set to be pushed to 2020 owing to the top teams’s cramped schedule 2018. As per report by PTI, an ICC source in the know of things have revealed that the seventh edition of the tournament has been postponed till 2020. The source also said that the venue for the next year’s tournament was not decided, making it easy for the ICC to shift the tournament.

“Yes, it is true that we are skipping with World T20 edition in 2018. Look, no venue was decided. The primary reason is there are too many bilateral series happening between member nations. It was not possible to schedule the tournament in 2018,” the ICC source was quoted as saying by PTI.

The source further stated that the T20 championship will make a comeback in 2020, one year after the 50-over World Cup. The venue for the tournament has not been decided yet but the source said that either of Australia and South Africa are likely to host the seventh edition of World T20. The previous six editions of the tournament have been held in South Africa (2007), England (2009), West Indies (2010), Sri Lanka (2012), Bangladesh (2014), India (2016).

“Yes, the tournament will return in 2020. It could be South Africa or Australia. The other reason apart from the bilateral series was that with too many ICC events on the anvil, the member nations were also of the view that it needed to be spaced out,” the source said.

Team India is set to play away series for the better part of next year starting with a series in South Africa tour followed by series in England and Australia respectively. Meanwhile, India is set to host the next edition of the ICC Champions Trophy as scheduled in 2021.

But as of now, the ICC is more focused on the World Test championship and getting the long-standing proposal for the same will be main agenda in its annual conference starting from Monday (June 19).  Another major development that is likely to take place during that meeting is that the Indian cricket board is all set to accept the 100 million USD additional funding. Previously, BCCI had expressed its displeasure after ICC’s new-revenue model had reduced its revenue by a good margin but they are now ready to accept it. The 100 million USD will be in addition to the 293 million that was offered by the ICC earlier this year.
