On the second day of the second Test, as the Sri Lankan bowlers struggled to contain the New Zealand batters, Kane Williamson made a historic achievement by becoming the first Black Caps player to score 8000 Test runs.

Williamson’s outstanding innings of 215 not only helped his team dominate the game but also secured his place as the highest run-scorer for New Zealand in Tests, surpassing Ross Taylor’s previous record of 7683 runs. This landmark was reached by Williamson just last month during the second Test against England in Wellington.

Kane Williamson hit his sixth double century in Test cricket during the match, joining the ranks of legendary players like Marvan Atapattu, Virender Sehwag, Javed Miandad, Younis Khan, Ricky Ponting, and Sachin Tendulkar. This remarkable feat placed him alongside these greats of the game. Among the players presently playing, only Virat Kohli has more double centuries than Williamson’s six.

Kane Williamson And Henry Nicholls Put On A Milestone Parade

Despite the rain-marred first day, New Zealand started the second day of the match with a fierce attacking approach. Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls played superbly, hitting boundaries with ease and showing no concern for the Sri Lankan bowlers’ pace or spin.

In the first session, the duo put on a masterclass, adding 149 runs to the scoreboard. During this period, Williamson reached the milestone of 8000 runs and also achieved his 28th Test century in just four overs. After lunch, Nicholls also reached his century, keeping up with the Kiwi team’s strong performance.

Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls made history by becoming the first New Zealand duo to score double centuries in the same Test match. This achievement also placed them in a select group of 18 pairs who have accomplished this feat in Test cricket.

Additionally, they created a new record in New Zealand by becoming the first pair to score double-hundreds in the same first-class innings. Moreover, they have the distinction of being the first New Zealand pair to have multiple triple-century partnerships. Their first partnership of this kind occurred in 2021 when they put on a record-breaking 369 runs for the fourth wicket against Pakistan in Christchurch.

As soon as Henry Nicholls scored his double-century, the hosts declared their innings at 580/4. They then quickly took wickets with the ball, leaving Sri Lanka in a difficult position at 26/2 by the end of Day 2.
