Nine years ago on the same day, Yuvraj Singh gave an example of just how big a fighter he is. This was the very day in 2011 when he came up with an incredible performance against West Indies in the 2011 World Cup which will be always remembered as Yuvraj Singh’s World Cup.

A tumour was growing inside Yuvraj Singh’s lungs but little did he or anyone else know what was coming their way. The sight of Yuvraj Singh sitting on his haunches during his monumental century against West Indies is still fresh in every cricket fans’ mind.

The legendary batsman vomited many times on the pitch and was visibly unwell. He braved the unbearable heat of Chennai and the illness that was later diagnosed as cancer to help India win the crucial game. Speaking about the game, India won the toss and opted to bat first. The team was in a spot of bother at 51/2. It was then that Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli got together to steady the ship.

The duo put on 122 runs for the third wicket to lay the foundation for a good total. Kohli was dismissed for 59, but Yuvraj Singh carried on batting.  He went on to score 113 runs with the help of 10 fours and two sixes. Riding on the southpaw’s knock India posted a total of 268 runs.

The all-rounder then picked up the wickets of Devon Thomas and Andre Russel and led India to a victory over the West Indies by 80 runs. Yuvraj Singh went on to deliver more match-winning performances in the competition and helped India win the tournament. He was named the Player of the Tournament for scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets.

After the tournament ended, he was diagnosed with cancer and the fighter he is, he beat the deadly disease too before making a fairytale return to international cricket. Yuvraj Singh brought down curtains on his illustrious career last year. In a career that spanned over 304 ODIs, 58 T20Is and 40 Tests, he scored over 13,000 runs.
