MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly are two captains with distinct qualities but a pair who has taken Indian cricket to great heights. Sourav Ganguly took over the reins in the early 2000s and got the team to bounce back from their barren run by inducing plenty of self-confidence. On the other hand, under MS Dhoni, India tasted success in all the ICC tournaments. The Prince of Kolkata was more of an attacking leader while Dhoni possessed a calm demeanour.

Hence, the question always arises of who amongst the two has had more impact on the Indian cricket team. In the Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected, Parthiv Patel has responded quite brilliantly and named his pick for the captain. Parthiv Patel shot into the international scene in 2002, making his Test debut against England in Nottingham under Ganguly.

The veteran keeper-batsman stated that the debate between Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni is a valid one, remarking that Ganguly became the captain in 2000 when India was going through one of its roughest phases. Parthiv added that Ganguly is the one who built the team while Dhoni won trophies for them.

The competition is valid between the two captains. One captain has a lot of trophies while the other captain has built the team. When Sourav Ganguly became the captain after 2000, Indian cricket was going through a difficult time,”

The 35-year old said that when the current BCCI President took over the charge, India began winning abroad, emerging victorious in Tests in England and Australia while also gaining a series victory in Pakistan. He also commended the 48-year old for captaining India to the final of the 2003 World Cup when few gave them a chance.

From there he built a team that won abroad, not that we are not winning earlier, but we won big Test matches abroad like Headingly, in Australia and then went to Pakistan and won the Test series. If you talk about the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, no one was thinking that the Indian team will reach the final,” Patel stated.

When speaking of MS Dhoni, the Gujarat cricketer lauded him for guiding India to plenty of title victories in the ICC competitions. However, at the end of it, his pick for the captain went for Sourav Ganguly since he constructed a team out of nothing.

If you talk about Dhoni, he has a lot of trophies. He is the only captain who has won so many trophies. In my opinion, if I have to cast my vote it would be for Dada because he built a team from scratch,” he added.
