Australia speedster Pat Cummins has managed to play all the five Tests in his debut home series. But the pace bowler will soon have a break on the sidelines ahead of the important South Africa tour, which begins in March.
Cummins started with an uncertainty playing his first home series due to a handful of injuries after bursting onto the international scene in 2011. Cummins, who returned with 4/80 in England’s first dig is elated to have exceeded his expectations by playing all the matches.
The 24-year-old Cummins was drafted in Australia’s squad for a five-match ODI series against England which starts on January 14. Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns admitted the pace trio of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Cummins will not feature in all the matches with uncapped duo Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson also in the squad.
“They’re going to reassess after this game. There was a bit of chat we might rest from one or two. We’ve got a bit of a break before the ODIs start,” Cummins told the reporters.
“I don’t know yet. It takes a little bit to get over each Test, but once you’re over a Test, you’re ready to start bowling, and ten overs in an ODI is a bit easier than a Test,” he further added.
The matter of workload management brings a lot of debate; however, the selectors will be eager to ensure Cummins is in red-hot form for the upcoming Proteas series.
Cummins earlier admitted to ABC Radio that he’d been surprised by both his durability and the docile nature of pitches during his maiden home Test series.
Cummins is now the most buoyant member of the pace battery, having played nine straight Test matches.
“At the start of the summer, being pretty realistic I thought five games would have been a long stretch. I’ve been really surprised with how well I’ve pulled up after each game,” Cummins admitted.
“If we’d had a few heavier games and I had a few aches and pains then it probably would have been spoken about,” he signed off.
