Jaydev Unadkat might be criticised for his sub-par performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Rajasthan Royals (RR) emptied their bank to buy the fast bowler two-year-in-a-row.
But despite all the criticism, Unadkat rose from ashes, to lead Saurashtra from the front and become the highest wicket-taking fast bowler in a Ranji trophy. He also carried the side to the prestigious Ranji trophy final against Bengal.
My chance will come: Jaydev Unadkat
Unadkat is only four wickets away from becoming the all-time highest wicket-taker in a Ranji season, surpassing Ashutosh Aman’s tally of 68. After displaying, so much consistency on the domestic circuit, Unadkat believes he will get his chance to play for Team India.
”I believe my chance will come and I will wait for it. Also, the age is on my side, I am 28. The way I have performed this season can be the benchmark I can set for myself for the rest of my career,” Unadkat told the Times of India.
Selectors likely to eye Jaydev Unadkat during transition period
In a precautionary move, Virat Kohli had hinted that India are scouting for possible replacements for the ageing fast bowling unit consisting Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav.
Jasprit Bumrah, 26, has many more years left in him but the major concern is with Ishant Sharma (32), Mohammed Shami (29) and Umesh Yadav (32), who can all run out of fuel in near future.
Shami and Ishant are on the top of their games as far as the Test format is concerned. The senior pacers can also pass on valuable inputs to the youngsters with their experience.
However, Kohli feels guys who can replace them should be up and ready, as the current crop of players will not age back and so the team management needs to be ready.
