Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has opened up on Rohit Sharma’s ongoing injury that has put him in doubt for the upcoming Australian tour. The BCCI has not opted for Rohit Sharma in any of the squads for the forthcoming tour down under and will continue to be monitored. According to Ravi Shastri, the 33-year old’s medical report signals that he runs the danger of injuring himself again.

Rohit Sharma, who serves as the captain of Mumbai Indians, suffered a hamstring injury in the match against Kings XI Punjab. Due to the same, Kieron Pollard has led the side in his absence; however, the all-rounder issued an encouraging piece of news about the regular skipper. Ravi Shastri said that the call not to include was after seeing Rohit’s medical reports by the selectors.

The former Indian cricketer stated that the people in-charge are handling the medical part of it. Shastri went on to reveal that he does not have a role in the selection process or choosing the players; however, the medical report suggests that Rohit Sharma runs the risk of injuring himself again.

It’s being handled by the people in charge of the medical part of it. We don’t get involved in that. They have submitted a report to the selectors and they have gone about their business. I have no say, neither I am a part of the selection. All I know is the medical report which says he could be in danger of injuring himself again,” Ravi Shastri stated as quoted by The Hindu.

The 58-year old understands the frustration creeping out of a player when he is injured, which makes them want to go out of the room and see when they could come back. Ravi Shastri went on to mention from his experience when in 1991 he visited Australia instead of taking a break, costing five years of his career. Hence, the greed and being in tremendous form could make them go back; however, Shastri hopes for Rohit and Ishant Sharma not to take that road.

There is nothing more frustrating for a player than he gets injured. Sometimes you know, you want to get out of that room of yours and try and see how quickly you can come back. What I fear, I have been through that as a cricketer myself. I finished my career in 1991 when I went back to Australia when I shouldn’t have. If I had taken a break for 3-4 months, I could’ve played five years longer for India. So, I speak from experience. It is a similar case. I wanted to go. Doctors told me don’t go. It was greed. I was in tremendous form so there was this eagerness to go back. I hope Rohit’s case is not that serious and same with Ishant (Sharma),” he added.
