Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had disclosed on the moment when he betrayed MS Dhoni’s trust in him. Ravichandran Ashwin emerged as one of the top-notch and wicket-taking bowlers, having made his IPL debut in 2009. The finger spinner was part of Chennai Super Kings’ victorious IPL campaign in 2010 and 2011 and Champions League T20 triumph in 2010 and 2014.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is undoubtedly one of the most successful franchises, having won the tournament three times. And Ashwin had been integral to their triumphs and dominance in the initial years. Even though the 33-year old ended the 2010 Champions League as the highest wicket-taker, there was one match, which was a forgettable one for Ashwin.

While speaking to Cricbuzz, Ravichandran Ashwin recalled that when the game ended in a super over against Victoria Bushrangers in Port Elizabeth, none other than him volunteered to bowl the super over. The 33-year old felt like an opportunity to be the match-winner.

We were playing in South Africa against the Victoria Bushrangers. The game ended in a Super Over. I think I ended up with a wicket, I can’t recall. I think Raina bowled the last over and got us into a Super Over. We were standing in a huddle, Fleming just ran, there was a quick meet up. As they were all talking, I just put my hand up and said I want to bowl the Super Over. There was Doug Bollinger, there was Murali, but nobody volunteered for that. For me it felt like an opportunity to win a game for the team.”

With Victoria needing to score 23 in the super over, captain David Hussey took the onus upon him to do the same. Ashwin described that he began bowling quicker and quicker but missed the yorkers. The off-spinner regretted leading his captain down when he shouldered the responsibility upon himself and failed to do the job.

David Hussey mustered three sixes, two couples, and a single and MS Dhoni regretted that Ashwin didn’t bowl the carom ball as narrated by the latter.

I bowled that over, I succumbed to pressure, David Hussey hit me for a six and then I started chasing the over, I started bowling quicker and quicker. I bowled the yorkers and didn’t execute them. Now if I think back, I just tell myself – what the hell have you done?

You wanted to bowl a Super Over, the man gave you a Super Over, CSK is a team that you wanted to be a part of, you wanted to be a performer and you have pushed your team out of the tournament now. You didn’t bowl the carom ball, you should have bowled it, you should have bowled it,” he said.
