Ravichandran Ashwin, on Wednesday, left a heartfelt message for Shikhar Dhawan after he was ruled out of the ongoing World Cup. A thumb injury cost Dhawan the chance to star for India in yet another ICC tournament. He had sustained the injury during the match against Australia when a Pat Cummins bouncer hit him on his thumb.

Shikhar Dhawan had gone on to score a sublime ton in the 36-run win over the world champions but didn’t come out to field. He had scans on his left thumb in Leeds and although the report was not very promising, the team-management kept him under observation. Rishabh Pant was called as a cover but the team-management wanted Dhawan to recover.

However, the BCCI medical team has now given its verdict as Dhawan is unlikely to recover any time soon. Consequently, he will not take any further part in the ongoing World Cup.

“Following several specialist opinions, he’ll be in a cast till mid-July and is ruled out of the World Cup. Dhawan’s fracture is at the base of the first metacarpal on his left hand,” Sunil Subramaniam, India’s team manager, said. “We’ve requested for Rishabh Pant as a replacement.”

Ever since the news came out, the fans have been busy showing their support for Dhawan. Ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also joined the bandwagon. The senior spinner, who could not make it to the World Cup squad, took to Twitter to post a heartfelt message for his teammate, writing:

“It’s so heartbreaking to be ruled out of a world cup due to injury, my heart goes out to @SDhawan25. Well done on your contribution so far buddy, get well soon. #Dhawan #ICCCricketWorldCup2019.”

With Dhawan out, Rishabh Pant has been named as replacement for the opener. Pant had joined the team last week in Manchester.
