Snubbed two times from the ICC World Cup 2019 squad, veteran batsman Ambati Rayudu has announced his retirement from international cricket. He sent a letter to the BCCI stating them about his decision to retire from the game.

Rayudu bids farewell to cricket

Rayudu was in very much contention for a World Cup spot leading to the tournament. Even skipper Virat Kohli backed him to be no four batsman – the most debated batting spot. But all-rounder Vijay Shankar peeped Ambati Rayudu to be in the 15-member squad after his poor outing in the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings. Soon after the team announcement, he questioned the selectors’ decision to pick Shankar over him with a tweet that mocked a statement by the head selector.

Furthermore, the selectors snubbed Ambati Rayudu twice more after injuries of Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar. While they preferred Rishabh Pant in place of Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal flew to England to replace Shankar. Interestingly, Agarwal is yet to make his ODI debut and was not in the five-member list reserves for the World Cup. Notably, Rayudu was in the list for the reserves as a batsman alongside Pant.

Ambati Rayudu has represented India in 55 ODIs scoring 1694 runs at an average of 47.05  with three centuries and ten fifties. Besides, in the five T20Is innings that he has played, Rayudu has scored 42 runs at an average of 10.50. Rayudu thanked one and all in his resignation letter to BCCI and named MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli under whom he has played in the letter. He also thanked his fans, family and friends in his goodbye note.
