Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting revealed D’Arcy Short has been in tremendous form and great future lies ahead of the batsman and expects the later would draw massive deal before the kicking off of the eleventh edition of the widely-acclaimed Indian Premier League (IPL).
“He [D’Arcy Short will go for big money, or decent money (in the IL), I’d imagine. He understands the game more now, he understands his own game more now,” Ricky Ponting was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia.
The 27-year-old aggressive batsman Short has been in the red-hot form while representing the Big Bash League franchise Hobart Hurricane which further saw him smashing unbeaten 122 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
“He’s confident, he’s a very naturally talented and skilled player, he’s not complicating things,” Ponting asserted.
Known for his pyrotechnics, Short is eventually seen as a package while relying solely on his incredible season with the bat.
“He’s batting that well at the moment, it doesn’t matter where he bats,” Ponting remarked.
Taking the stats into consideration, Ponting reiterated the promising batter has been giving his best in the shortest version of the game while hailing his willow prowess.
So far, in seven games Short registered 465 runs at the whopping average of 77.50 which further saw him surpassing Shaun Marsh in the most runs list from a player which came in the second edition of the BBL edition.
While reflecting on the seventh edition of the ongoing BBL, Ponting has been in awe of the Hurricanes’ batting mainstay.
Interestingly, Ponting, who has already been appointed as an assistant coach for the Tri-nation Twenty20 series which also includes New Zealand believes Short could be in the contention for his remarkable run in the T20 format.
“He’s a pretty complete package. He’s a good fielder. I’m sure all the Australian selectors are talking about him right now,” Ponting said on Short.
Australia is bound to play their T20I fixture on February 3 and the final of the tri-series will be held on February in Auckland.
On the other side, while speaking thoroughly about the widely-recognized Indian Premier League (IPL) Ponting believes Short would have a massive shot at the lucrative T20 professional league.
“Whatever he goes for will be a big payday for him (given) he’s put himself into the auction at base price (about $AUD 40,000),” Ponting added.
On the other side, it’s pertinent to mention that IPL franchises management including coaches are having a closer look at the ongoing BBL which could further change the fortune of the professionals.
“A lot of guys who are head coaches in the IPL and have seen him up close in the last few weeks. He’ll fetch a good price,” Ponting believes.
Concluding, the mega-auction is bound to kick off on January 27 and will culminate on January 28 in Bengaluru and Ponting asserted distinct teams of the league would be interested in sealing Short in the line-up to strengthen the batting core.
With his leg-spin orthodox bowling, Short has bagged six wickets in 16 T20 which already saw him scoring 663 runs at an average of 44.20 and has expressed to continue his form to set the horizon for the international cricket.
