Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting was able to breathe a sigh of relief after his side reigned supreme over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi. It helped the Delhi Capitals clinch the second position in the IPL 2020 points table, setting up a clash with Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier. Ricky Ponting underlined that losing four matches on the bounce was the hardest thing to digest.

After their seventh victory in IPL 2020, Delhi Capitals looked in track to reach the playoffs comfortably. However, their losses to SunRisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab, and Kolkata Knight Riders not only made them hang on for dear life but also increased other team’s chances. Nevertheless, they sealed the second spot by beating the Royal Challengers by six wickets on Monday.

Ricky Ponting highlighted losing four matches on the trot as the hardest thing; however, it was essential to keep that confidence up and running. Ponting mentioned that suffering defeat at the back end could dent their momentum. However, he credited the players for keeping their energy on the rise and putting on a stellar show.

It’s been the hardest thing. I think, over the last couple of weeks, the key was to make sure that the confidence was still up. Whenever you lose a few games in a row at the back-end of tournament, it can sometimes be a bit difficult to change the momentum. But, credit to the boys – they were outstanding. You could see different energy around the group that really set the tempo for the whole game,” Ponting said as quoted by Times of India.

The former Australian captain went on to say that while it was not a perfect game, the performance was solid and winning with more than an over to spare against RCB is credible. Ponting stated that it since was a must-win game, he feels most proud, enabling the boys to showcase an emphatic display.

“It wasn’t the perfect game but it was a really good, solid performance that we needed to put up. They are a really good side, and we won with an over to spare, which in T20 cricket is quite a big margin. I am most proud because it was do-or-die, and the boys knew that and they responded in a really positive manner,” he added.
