Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting recently held a question-answer session on Twitter where he was asked a number of interesting questions by his followers. One of the questions was to name his pick for the most complete batsman of this generation.
India skipper Virat Kohli is being widely regarded as the best player across formats. The numbers also support the right-handed batsman. He is currently the number one ODI and Test batsman in the world. Virat Kohli’s unprecedented consistency with the bat has left almost everyone surprised as well as impressed.

He is the only batsman in the world right now with average of more than 50 in all the three formats. Virat Kohli has already scored more than 11,000 ODI runs and is also the leading run-scorer in T20Is. At just 31, he is second in the list of most ODI tons after hitting 43 centuries. In Tests, he has 27 tons to his name while overall he has scored 103 half-centuries.

Along with Kohli, the likes of Steve Smith and Kane Williamson are also considered by many as the best in the world. But as far as Ricky Ponting is concerned, he is having a hard time. The legendary batsman could not pick one name when asked to name the best modern day batsman as he wrote:
“Hard to separate Virat Kohli and Steve Smith”

Steve Smith is regarded by many as the best Test batsman of this generation. Recently, he proved his worth in ODIs too. In the ODI series against India, he played knocks of 98 and 131 although Australia lost both the games. After the series, Smith had praised Kohli too, backing the India skipper to break many more records.
“Yeah, he is terrific. His batting numbers just speak for themselves. I think he’s an incredible player in all three formats and I think we will see him break many records. He’s already broken plenty of them and I see him breaking many more over the years. He has got the hunger for runs and doesn’t stop getting them. Hopefully, he can stop getting them against Australia, that’ll be nice,” Smith had said while talking about Kohli.
