That Mumbai Indians would retain Rohit Sharma was very much clear. The India opener was roped in by the Mumbai-based franchise in 2011, and it has been an inspired decision. The franchise did not have the best of outings in the first three seasons but their improved fortunes coincided with Rohit’s addition in the team.

After becoming an integral part of the team, Rohit was made the captain in 2013 when Ricky Ponting was benched due to poor form, and the right-handed batsman has not looked back since then. Mumbai Indians won their maiden IPL title under Rohit’s captaincy in 2013. It was a terrific season for him as a captain as his team went on to win the Champions League T20 as well.

In 2015, he led Mumbai Indians to win the IPL title yet again by beating Chennai Super Kings. He had also won the Man of The Match award in the finals. In 2017, the Mumbai Indians finished at the top of the table and also went on to win the final under his captaincy. In doing so, Rohit became the only skipper to have led his team to win the IPL three times.

Rohit’s performance with the bat has been equally impressive. With 4,207 runs in 154 innings, the 30-year old has the most runs for Mumbai in the history of the IPL. And the fans are all set to see the highly successful association in the coming years too as he has been retained by his franchise.

Mumbai Indians on Thursday, 4 January, chose to retain three players – Rohit along with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Delighted with the news, Rohit took to Twitter to express his excitement and said he is looking forward to the upcoming season.

Excited to be part of this wonderful franchise again. This team is what it is today because of its wonderful fans, people who work hard behind the scenes and it’s passionate owners. Along with @Jaspritbumrah93 and @hardikpandya7 I look forward to the season ahead @mipaltan ?, he wrote.
