New Zealand’s veteran batsman Ross Taylor has come up with a superb statement after scoring a match-winning century against India in the first ODI. Taylor played a beautiful knock of 109 runs to get the Kiwis across the finishing line. The Black Caps have now won the first game of the tour after being clean swept (5-0) by the Men in Blue in the T20Is. The Kiwis now lead the three-match ODI series 1-0.

Having won the toss, Tom Latham invited the visitors to bat first. India posted a fighting total of 347 for four in their 50 overs. The highlight of the Indian innings was Shreyas Iyer’s maiden ODI century. But, his efforts went in vain as the Black Caps emerged victorious while chasing the target of 348 in 48.1 over after the loss of six wickets.

Ross Taylor Speaks Up On His Hamilton Century:

Man of the Match Ross Taylor faded away India’s hopes of winning a sixth straight game of the tour. His century at Seddon Park assisted New Zealand in recording the second-highest run chase against India in the ODIs.

Apart from him, skipper Latham played a gritty knock of 69 runs to help the Kiwis get across the finishing line.

Speaking in the post-match ceremony, Taylor said, “It has been an interesting summer, so as to speak, good to get across the line. To restrict them under 350, gave us a chance. We were fortunate with the right-left combination and we targeted the short boundary. Tom released the pressure off me. I told my boys Hamilton is like sleeping in my bed. Southee said you can take the bed with you. You try not to have a hangover, but nice to be there at the end to finish it off.”

India’s bowlers proved to be costly in the first ODI. Shardul Thakur ended up being the most expensive bowler as he gave away 80 runs in nine overs. Kuldeep Yadav followed with 84 runs in 10 overs.

India’s bowlers clearly lacked discipline as they gave away 29 extras which included 24 wide deliveries.

India and New Zealand will now lock horns for the second game of the series on February 8 at Auckland.
