Australia opener David Warner has been fined 100 percent of his match fees along with three de-merits points, while South African wicket-keeper Quinton De Kock has been fined 75 percent of his match fees along with three de-merits points for the staircase altercation during the first Test in Durban.
In a CCTV footage released from the staircase leading to the dressing rooms at the Kingsmead in Durban, both the players were seen involved in a heated exchange at tea on day four.
The incidence has been a point of discussion since the CCTV footage emerged.
After an investigation by both the individual boards and the International Cricket Council (ICC), fines on both the players have been imposed which both of them have now accepted.
De Kock, however, showed hesitation in accepting the punishment but after a 25 percent let off by the ICC, the South African wicket-keeper received the fine.
A day after the settlement was made on the issue; Warner came out and spoke about the incidence.
In a video posted by Cricket Australia, David Warner said Quinton De Kock passed some personal comments about his wife which were termed as ‘vulgar and void’ by the Australian vice-captain.
Warner also stated the players must not comment on another player’s wife and not talk about any women in that sense in general.
“We were about to walk up the first set of stairs to our dressing room as I was walking in front of him it was then when he decided to say what he said, which was a very disgusting and wild comment about my wife. I don’t think you should be saying that about any lady or a player’s wife.”
“It got the emotional response from me, it sort of panned the way back up stairs and I wanted him to express it loud, not just say it at someone’s back and look in my eye and say it.”
When asked how will he react if something of this sort happens in the future,
“Warner replied, I would probably take the appropriate action and try and go to a quite room and try and get what he said out of him in front of the people.”
“I do get quite vocal on the field but never would I ever bring someone’s family into that context or say disgusting wild comments about a players wife or women in general.”
“Hopefully, this scenario never happens in future. I am very regretful the way it played out, and hopefully, we can move on from this”
