The second day of the third Test being played at the Wanderers went to Team India as they managed to dismiss the hosts on 194 which meant that the tourists trailed by just seven runs after the first innings. South Africa started day two with an overnight score of 6/1 and looked to take a healthy lead of 100 odd runs in the first innings. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar had different ideas for the hosts.
Kumar dismissed Dean Elgar early in the day for just four runs restricting South Africa to 16/2. Hashim Amla and night-watchman Kagiso Rabada were then involved in a 64 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. Rabada frustrated the Indian bowlers and scored 30 off 84 deliveries. Rabada was removed by Ishant Sharma as he edged one to Ajinkya Rahane in the gully region.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar then got rid of South Africa’s man in form AB De Villiers for just five runs with a beautiful in-swinger. De Villiers played completely around the ball as the ball uprooted the middle stump. Proteas skipper’s Faf Du Plessis lean patch continued as he left alone a delivery by Jasprit Bumrah which hit his off stump. Quinton De Kock was also dismissed soon after for a low score of eight by Bumrah.
Vernon Philander then came to the crease to accompany Hashim Amla. Amla brought up his 37th Test fifty and was involved in a 44 runs partnership with Philander. Bumrah also removed amla. Philander then played a handy innings of 35 runs lower down the order which helped the hosts go past the Indian total of 187 in the first innings.
Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up his first five-wicket haul in just his third Test match. He finished with bowling figures of 5/54 in 18.5 overs. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the most impressive bowler in the Indian team and picked up three wickets for 44 runs in 19 overs.
India sent in Parthiv Patel along with Murali Vijay to open the innings. Patel looked good before Aiden Markram took a great catch to dismiss him for 16. India was 49/1 with a lead of 42 runs at stumps on day two.
