While Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s dwindling fortunes with the bat had made many criticise him, his place in the team has rarely been questioned.

And the reason behind it is the role he plays for the team which is mentoring the pool of players who are yet to find their place in international cricket. In fact, skipper Virat Kohli is also relatively new to the captaincy in limited-overs format, and the former India skipper never shies away from extending a helping hand to his successor.

Even without being the captain, Dhoni has been playing such a role ever since he stepped down from his post in one-day and T20 cricket last year. Seemingly in the twilight of his illustrious career, Dhoni is not only contributing with his bat and gloves but is also mentoring the youngsters.

Despite not being the prime man, Dhoni handles the execution of strategies, field placements and other essential changes in limited-overs cricket.

Well, the ongoing first of the six-match One-Day International series at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban witnessed another instance of Dhoni’s new role, as the World Cup-winning skipper was constantly advising spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav from behind the stumps. Both the spinners are touring South Africa for the first time with the senior team and could not have asked for a better guide than Dhoni.

Here is a clip showing Dhoni advising Chahal when the latter asked for a particular field placement:
