SA vs WI: Temba Bavuma Replaces Dean Elgar As Test Captain, Steps Down As T20I Captain Of South Africa

South African Cricket Team had a forgettable Test Series against Australia where they lost by 2-0. The Proteas were considered to be red-hot favourites to qualify for ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2021-23) but their series defeats against England & Australia have put them in a precarious position.

There’s no doubt that South Africa has got a lethal bowling attack but their batters are not performing according to their credentials which has started to hurt the team. South Africa are due to play a 2-match Test series against West Indies commencing from 28th February where they have to win the series by 2-0 to give themselves a chance in the WTC final.

Temba Bavuma New Test Skipper

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has appointed Temba Bavuma as the new Test skipper. It was reported that Dean Elgar’s tactics weren’t that attacking which resulted in defeats against England & Australia.  Temba Bavuma has stepped down from T20I captaincy and it would be interesting to see whether he makes the cut for the T20I team after a disappointing performance in T20 WC 2022.

It won’t be wrong to say that the captaincy was affecting Dean Elgar’s game where the batter was in two minds whether to attack or defend. There are reports which suggest that JP Duminy would be the new batting coach and would replace Justin Sammons who was under former Head Coach Mark Boucher’s tenure.

Temba Bavuma recently won the ODI Series against England by 2-1 where the skipper made smart decisions. The inclusion of Aiden Markram is a huge boost to the Proteas as he is someone who can hold one end and capitalize on a start. CSA would be hoping that Bavuma can covert his form to Test arena.
