Shubman Gill has impinged himself as one of the rising stars of Indian cricket courtesy his consistent exploits for India U-19, India A, and his domestic team Punjab. Gill, who finished as the leading run-scorer in India’s triumphant 2018 U-19 World Cup campaign, and he was immediately racked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 mega-auctions.

Two years on, and according to Scott Styris, Shubman Gill is the most vital cog of the Kolkata Knight Riders batting-unit especially after the departure of seasoned Indian campaigners like Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa and the former Kiwi all-rounder feels that the upcoming IPL season will be a defining one for the 21-year-old Gill

“I’ve been the No.1 cheerleader, for the last 18 months. Since Shubhman Gill has been around I can say I’m at the top of that Fanboy list and I think Gill is a fabulous cricketer. I think he’s a terrific, talented batsman,” Scott Styris said on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Live’

“Shubhman Gill, now with the loss of Robin and Gautam Gambhir at KKR, he’s now a leader, the focal point of that batting unit, he is best batsman of KKR,” he added.

Scott Styris also pointed out the difference between the role of Shubman Gill for KKR as compared to his fellow young players like Devdutt Padikkal, Prithvi Shaw and others.

According to Styris, Gill has a lot more responsibility on his shoulders as compared to a Shaw or a Jaiswal since he does not have any established Indian international batsman around him.

“The big difference though was with some of the other young players around, like Prithvi Shaw or Devdutt Padikkal, these young superstar talents is that they’re allowed to sort of grow into their role,” he said.

“So, there’s a lot more responsibility on Gill that you don’t see with a lot of those other youngsters and that may be the only thing that holds him down. Just looked great and he has played great, but he has got the extra responsibility that some of those other players don’t,” Styris said.

KKR will open their 2020 Dream11 IPL campaign against defending champions, Mumbai Indians, on Wednesday and Shubman Gill will be tasked with the responsibility to prove his side with good starts at the top of the order.
