Shane Watson nearly took Chennai Super Kings over the line in the thrilling final against Mumbai Indians. The Australian allrounder, who had scored a scintillating century in the final of last year’s final, scored a fighting 80. However, his effort eventually went in vain as Mumbai Indians managed to win the nail-biting contest by just one run.

The game went right down to the wire with Super kings needing 9 runs from the last over. With Shane Watson at the crease batting on 76 and Ravindra Jadeja giving him company, the Super Kings looked favourites to win the game. For Mumbai, the responsibility was on Lasith Malinga to defend the 8 runs and the veteran delivered. The first three balls went for four runs before Shane Watson was run out while trying to take a double. Shardul Thkaur then dispatched a full-toss for a double before being trapped in front of the wicket with his team needing 2 runs from the final ball.

Super Kings had started their chase on a good note and had raced away to 53 for 1 inside the powerplay. However, Mumbai soon dismissed Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni in quick succession to reduce the Super Kings to 82 for 4 from 70 for 1. Watson was waging a lone battle from there on. The game was drifting away from the Super Kings before he lofted Krunal Pandya for three back-to-back sixes in the 18th. That left them needing 19 runs in 14 balls. The game had turned on its head before the Super Kings threw it away thanks to some brilliant bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Malinga.

Watson, however, should receive praise from all over for his knock. What made his knock even more special was that he was bleeding profusely while trying to take his team over the line. Watson’s left knee was covered with blood but he did not give up and fought till the end.

Harbhajan Singh, on Monday, took to Instagram to state that Watson needed six stitches after the game. Harbhajan also said that the allrounder did not tell anyone about the injury during the game.
