Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals are now standing on the verge of making it to the playoffs. Delhi Capitals, on Monday, thrashed Rajasthan Royals by six wickets to register their seventh win of the season and prove their title credentials.  With seven wins from 11 games, Delhi Capitals displaced Chennai Super Kings from the top of the points table as they took another giant step towards making it to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Asked to bat first, Royals were off to a disastrous start with Sanju Samson getting run out in the second over without even facing a ball. But before Delhi could cash in on the breakthrough,  Ajinkya Rahane stood tall and scored his second century of the IPL and first since 2012 to bail the Royals out of trouble. In the company of skipper Steve Smith, Rahane batted Royals to a position of strength.

It looked like the Royals were on course for a total well over 200 before Smith fell to Axar Patel after scoring his 2nd successive fifty. But unlike Smith, Rahane continued his exploits with the bat and went on to complete a fine century off 58 balls.

However, the Royals just could not finish their innings on a strong note as they managed to collect just 41 runs in the last 30 balls. The failure to score quickly in the death over hurt Royals as Delhi Capitals chased down the 191-run total. Dhawan gave Delhi a quick start and departed after slamming 54 from just 27 deliveries.  Delhi lost Shreyas Iyer cheaply but Shaw and Pant batted the Royals out of the game by adding 84 runs for the third wicket.

Pant remained unbeaten on 78 from just 36 deliveries to take his team home in the very final over.

Speaking at the end of the game, skipper Iyer said his team is lucky to get good batting track in away games. He also had a word of praise for Pant.

“When we play away from home, wickets are so good luckily and it is perfect for our batters. I was really happy the way we started. Shikhar is doing a great job in powerplay. We are unaware of how the wicket is going to play at Delhi and we are being outplayed at our home. We are happy with our team is going. The positivity is spreading in the camp. We knew Royals are going to go all-out. Wicket was a belter and the way they started we thought they will score 200. Rahane batted brilliantly. Our bowlers contained well to restrict Royals,” said Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer further revealed the Mantra of head coach Ricky Ponting, saying:

“Ricky tells us that batsman who get start should bat for a long time. Rishabh took that initiative and batted till the end. In the previous match, I was there till the end and Shikhar did it too in one match.”
