At a time when BCCI is looking to appoint the next India head coach, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has said he would like to be the team’s coach in the future. While he does not fulfil the criteria to become the coach at present, Ganguly wishes to be India’s coach one day. Ganguly is one of the finest captains to have led India.

He is often credited for instilling a fearless culture in Indian cricket. Under his captaincy, India beat the all-conquering Australian team at home in Tests before winning Test series in Pakistan and drawing a series in Australia. He also led India to the miraculous win in the NatWest series over England and the final of the 2003 World Cup.

“Definitely, I’m interested but not at this point of time. Let one more phase go then I will throw my name into the fray,” Sourav Ganguly told PTI.

The legendary cricketer further said that he is engaged in too many commitments at the moment and need to complete them first.

“Currently, I’m associated with too many things — IPL, CAB, TV commentary. Let me complete this. But I will definitely put my hat at some stage. Provided I get selected. But definitely I’m interested. Not now, but in the future,” Ganguly said.

India, meanwhile, will announce the next coach after the conclusion of the West Indies tour. Ravi Shastri’s contract had ended after the World Cup before the BCCI handed him a 45-day extension. Shastri is looking the favourite to become the coach once again because of his fine rapport with skipper Virat Kohli.

The others who are in the race to become the coach are Australian Tom Moody and former India internationals Lalchand Rajput and Robin Singh.
