England national cricket team are going through a tough phase as far as Test cricket is concerned. Earlier, they lost to New Zealand in Test series by 1-0. Now, they suffered a 107-run painful defeat at the hands of South Africa in the first Test match at SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium in Centurion.
They are currently ranked sixth in the ICC Test Championship points table with just 56 points. Having played six matches, they won two, lost three and one match ended in a draw. Meanwhile, England coach Chris Silverwood knows exactly what needs to be done to resurrect team’s confidence.
Following the Boxing Day Test defeat against Proteas, England coach himself has hinted that the team management might drop either James Anderson or Stuart Broad for the upcoming Test match which is scheduled to be played at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on January 3.
Jack Leach regains full fitness
Talking about the opening Test encounter, England went for a pace attack. Now that spinner Jack Leach has regained complete fitness and Silverwood stressed on the fact that they are willing to take a bold decision when the situation demands.
“In Jimmy (Anderson) and Stuart (Broad), we have a wealth of experience and we’d be really stupid not to take that into consideration every game,” Chris Silverwood was quoted as saying by International Cricket Council.
“But, equally, you want your youngsters to come through, and if we’re going to make room for a spinner, we’ve got to have a look at which seamers are right for this pitch. If there’s a big decision, we’re not afraid to make it.”
As the upcoming match is going to be played on Newlands pitch, it would surely give spinners an upper hand and England coach is pretty much aware of it. “We’ve got to look at playing a spinner at Newlands,” he added. “We’ll go down there and do what we always do – look through the records, what features where, and who is going to have the most impact on that game. We’ll do our homework and go from there.”
