Australia star Steve Smith has said he cannot wait to play in the upcoming home Test series against India later this year. India are scheduled to visit Australia towards the end of this year for the blockbuster four-match Border-Gavaskar series.

Steve Smith could not play the last Test series between the two sides as he was serving the ban imposed on him due to the ball-tampering scandal. India had gone on to win the series 2-1 to register their first-ever Test series victory on Australian soil.

“I had few conversations with him (Virat) off the field, few messages here and there in recent times just to see how things are going in India. He is a terrific guy and we both play hard out on the field and play as well for our respective teams and its part of the game,” Steve Smith said during the ‘Cricket Connected’ show on Star Sports.

The last time Steve Smith played a Test series against India, he was the best performer with the bat. In 2017, the former Australia skipper was at his best as he top-scored in the Test series in India. He had scored 499 runs with the help of 3 centuries although Australia lost the series 1-2.

Praise for Virat Kohli:

Steve Smith also praised Virat Kohli for his gesture in last year’s World Cup match between the two teams. Kohli had famously asked the Indian fans not to taunt Steve Smith and David Warner over the ball-tampering scandal.

“Virat’s gesture in the World Cup to the Indian fans that were giving Me (Smith) and David Warner little bit of a stick, I appreciated that and I share that with him straight up,” he said.

He concluded by saying that he cannot wait to play in this year’s Test series and also stated that the series ‘will be something incredibly special’.

“He is a terrific guy and the way he has lead the Indian Team has been amazing, they are amazing side and can’t wait to play them when they come out to Australia this year will be something incredibly special,” said Steve Smith.
