Sunil Gavaskar Explains Why England is Favourites for World Cup

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has put his weight behind England to lift their maiden World Cup. England has played fearless cricket in the recent past and they are considered as the favorites to lift the coveted trophy. In fact, the English team was knocked out from the first round of the 2015 World Cup.

However, the Eoin Morgan-side was able to turn the tables after the World Cup. They have ticked the right boxes as the team has delivered consistent performances in the last three years.

England is favorites for the World Cup.

England is the number one side in the ICC ODI Rankings and they have played quality cricket to borne rewards. Furthermore, the ICC World Cup 2019 is going to be hosted in England and Wales. Consequently, the England team can make most of the home conditions in the ODI showpiece.

Sunil Gavaskar believes England will be favorites for the World Cup 2019 because of their attitude towards the ODI format. They have played at the top of his game and they would like to go all the way in the quadrennial event.

“The strong favourites in the World Cup tournament are England. And it is not because of the fact that it will be a home World Cup for them. But because they have changed their attitude towards ODI cricket. They had lost in the league stage in 2015 World Cup, probably against Bangladesh”.

England can make most of the home conditions.

“But since then, the manner in which they changed their game, the way in which they picked their team, England have grown into a strong side. They have a good opening pair, they have strong middle-order batters, they also have a good all-rounder in the form of and when you play at home you also have a strong backing,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Meanwhile, England has never savored success in the World Cup event. They have qualified for the final of the World Cup on three occasions but haven’t been able to go all the way. England has quality players in their line-up and if they play at the top of their game in the quadrennial event, they can win the World Cup for the first time.

They have in-form players in their side and they would be a side to watch out for in the mega event. Eoin Morgan has led with aplomb and he would like to lead from the front.
