Veteran Indian batsman and one of the legends of the game, Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on the ongoing limited over wicket-keeper debate in team India. Gavaskar has made it clear that he will still prefer Rishabh Pant over others as his first choice wicket-keeper. Team India is currently going through a transition. The team is looking for a perfect replacement of MS Dhoni.

Since Dhoni’s departure from international cricket, Rishabh Pant has been given numerous chances. But, the youngster has failed miserably time and again. In the recently concluded series against Australia, Pant got injured in the first ODI and wasn’t available for selection in the second game of the series. Team India went with KL Rahul as their alternate choice and Rahul proved his mantle as he had a great game with the bat and the gloves behind the wickets. This earned Rahul a place in the final ODI as well even after Pant being available for the third game.

Sunil Gavaskar Shares His Opinion

Sunil Gavaskar has now stepped into the ongoing debate as to who should be the regular choice wicket-keeper for India in limited overs format? Gavaskar has made it pretty clear that he still prefers Rishabh Pant over the other options available. “I will go with Rishabh Pant in the limited-overs cricket. If you need a finisher at No. 6 then Rishabh Pant can do that for the team,” Gavaskar told Aaj Tak.

He added, “Also he is a left-handed batsman, so considering the Indian batting line-up where we have only one left-handed batsman in form of Shikhar Dhawan, so if we have another southpaw in top-order then it will be beneficial for the team. So I will go with Rishabh Pant.”

This statement has surfaced at a crucial time. Captain Kohli has indirectly hinted that they are looking for new fortunes in KL Rahul as a wicket-keeper. Also, BCCI has not included Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the annual contracts list. It will be interesting to see as to who keeps wickets for India in limited over format specially keeping in account the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in Australia this year.
