While the modern-day cricketing fraternity swoons to the greatness of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, but one has to understand the roots came from Sunil Gavaskar. Sunil Gavaskar was one of the greatest opening batsmen of his era and often even faced the fearsome bowling attack of the West Indies and Australia with fortitude. But former keeper-batsman Kiran More has made a slightly surprising revelation.
From 1971-1987, Sunil Gavaskar piled heaps of runs across 233 games in Test and ODI cricket. He was the first batsman to reach 10000 Test runs and amassed aggregate of 10122 in 125 fixtures. His tally of 34 centuries was also the highest number of tons in the format. But Kiran More has asserted that despite looking unbeatable at the crease, the 70-year-old used to struggle in the nets.
The 57-year old stated that Gavaskar did not like to practice in the nets. More continued saying that it’s hard imagining the right-handed batsman scoring runs in the match while witnessing him in training drills. Contrary to the convictions, the Mumbai batsman dazzled when batting in the middle.
“He was one of the worst players I’ve ever seen in the nets. He used to never like practising in the nets. When you see him practice in the nets and he’s going to play in a Test match tomorrow, and when he goes and bats in a Test match it’s 99.9 per cent different. When you see him bat in the nets it’s like ‘How is he going to score runs?’ And then when you see him next day morning it’s like ‘Wow’,” More stated in the Greatest Rivalry Pocast.
The best God-given gift given to Sunil Gavaskar is his concentration: Kiran More
The Vadodara-born went on to hail the level of concentration Sunil Gavaskar possessed and labels as a God-given gift. Once, Gavaskar sets his sights in; it is almost impossible for anybody to get close to him or get his attention.
“The best God-given gift given to Sunil Gavaskar is his concentration. The level of concentration he had was unbelievable. Once he would get into his zone, nobody could get close to him or he would not listen to you. If you’re talking next to him or dancing next to him, he’ll be in his zone and he’ll be focussing on his cricket,” he added.
