Suresh Raina called time on his career soon after his CSK captain MS Dhoni decided to hang up his boots on Independence Day. Raina was a solid middle order batsman for the national team and played under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly. Following his retirement the BCCI President sent out a heartfelt message on Raina’s contribution for the side.
Ganguly said that Raina was one of the key performers for India in the limited-overs. He also added that he came from lower-down the order and played some match winning innings to go on and form a crucial pair with Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni.
“Suresh Raina has been one of the key performers in limited overs cricket for India. Coming lower down the order and playing some of the match-winning knocks requires a lot of skill and talent. He along with Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni formed a solid middle order for India in ODIs. I wish him and his family all the very best,” Sourav Ganguly said.
Raina will however continue to be an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise.
Raina had been far from contention to play for the Indian cricket team. He made his last international appearance in 2018 during India’s tour of England and since then has been out-of-favour of the side.
Raina batted at No.3 Or the fourth spot in his career which now belongs to Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer in the recent scheme of things as far as the limited-overs is concerned. Thus he had no chance for a comeback.
Raina retired with an average of 25 in Tests, 35 in ODIs and nearly 30 in the shortest format of the game.
