Gautam Gambhir, the highest run scorer for Delhi in recently concluded Ranji Trophy, could be very well dropped from the side due to off-field reasons.

Gambhir, who was banned for four first-class games before the start of the season, played all the matches for Delhi after his ban got revoked but he seems to be in his circle since then. As per a report in TOI, Gambhir did not travel with the team during Ranji Trophy matches and used to report on the eve of the game. This was very well seen when he was probably the first player to reach Indore for the final of Ranji Trophy but did not take part in practice sessions before the final.

In fact, he also left the team early after the conclusion of the final and was not the part of the squad that was left stranded at Indore Airport.

Gambhir is presently in Mumbai, donning a hat of cricket expert for a scribe. It is to be noted that Delhi’s journey in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018 starts on January 9 and the team is not yet announced.

Rishabh Pant is expected to retain the captaincy due to his recent show on captaincy front in Ranji Trophy. Also, the selectors do not have any option as both Unmukt Chand and Milind Kumar – the experienced duo of Delhi – were dropped from playing XI during Ranji Trophy. Though Delhi can look at Pawan Negi, a limited-overs specialist for Delhi who played one T20I in 2016.

A report in TOI also adds that the team has already been selected. It further says that Justice Vikramjit Sen, who revoked the ban on Gambhir, will meet the player soon.

The state association is expected to make the list public soon, and Gambhir might be dropped if the association feels it right.

Still, Gambhir, who was not retained by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL retention ceremony, is expected to highlight the auction ceremony once again when his name will come up. It will be after seven years when his name will be in the auction.
